Early Keyboard Journal welcomes scholarly articles related to the music, performance practices, and organology of keyboard instruments to about 1850. Submissions are reviewed by the Editor and Editorial Board, who look for manuscripts that are informative, engaging, well written, thoroughly researched, and appropriately documented. Articles should have original content and must not have been published previously in either printed or electronic form.
1. Authors of articles submitted for consideration should provide the Editor with one complete copy. All material should be double-spaced on 8.5 x 11 paper, with margins of at least one inch (A4 paper will be accepted from overseas contributors).
2. The article should include a short abstract that conforms to RILM guidelines (available online at http://www.rilm.org/abstinfo.html), and a list of works cited, following Chicago Manual of Style bibliography guidelines.
3. Articles should use footnote citations that conform to the guidelines in chapters 16 and 17 of The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 2003). First references should give a full bibliographic citation; further references to the same material should be abbreviated to author and short title.
4. For pitch designations, use this system: CC C c c1 c2 c3 c4, with middle C as c1.
5. Tables, figures, and facsimiles should be furnished in camera-ready form, either as glossy photographs or computer scans. Captions for figures should be typed, double-spaced, on separate sheets.
6. Music examples should be printed on separate sheets, provided with clear captions exactly as they are to appear in the article, and based on authoritative sources that are properly cited in the captions. All illustrations should be clearly cited in the text and their preferred placement indicated.
7. Authors of accepted articles will be asked to submit the text of the entire article electronically in Microsoft Word files. Tables, figures, photographs, facsimiles and music examples for accepted articles should be furnished electronically as TIFF, PDF, or JPEG files.
8. Permission citations must accompany copyrighted materials; copies of permissions should be sent to the Editor within two months of a manuscript's acceptance for publication.
